Importance of Checking your Tyres

A Toyota Corolla owner recently visited our workshop after noticing some issues with their vehicle's tyres.

Upon initial inspection, our team quickly identified visible damage on the tyre walls, including a network of cracks. The tyre tread depth was also measured to ensure it remained within legal limits, but the main concern was the condition of the sidewalls. Such damage could potentially compromise the structural integrity of the tyres, increasing the risk of a blowout or loss of control while driving.

Common Causes of Cracked Tyre Walls

Tyre wall cracks can develop due to several contributing factors, many of which are preventable with proper care and maintenance. One primary cause is exposure to harsh environmental conditions. Prolonged exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to the breakdown of the rubber compound, resulting in cracks forming along the sidewalls. Similarly, extreme temperature fluctuations can weaken the material over time, especially when tyres are subjected to repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Improper maintenance is another significant factor. Driving with incorrect tyre pressure, whether too high or too low, places unnecessary strain on the tyre walls. Under-inflation can cause the sidewalls to flex excessively, leading to premature wear, while over-inflation increases the risk of cracks due to reduced flexibility. Neglecting to rotate tyres regularly or failing to check for signs of ageing and damage can also exacerbate the problem.

Natural wear and tear from years of use is inevitable, particularly for vehicles that cover high mileage or frequently encounter rough road surfaces. As tyres age, the rubber naturally begins to lose its elasticity, making it more susceptible to cracking. To minimise risks, it is crucial to maintain proper tyre care routines and replace tyres as recommended by the manufacturer.

Gippy Automotive Addresses the Tyre Damage

After assessing the extent of the tyre wall damage, our team strongly advised the customer to replace all affected tyres immediately. Damaged sidewalls cannot be repaired, as they are critical to the overall strength and stability of the tyre. Continuing to drive on compromised tyres significantly increases the risk of a blowout, especially at high speeds or during demanding driving conditions. For this reason, replacing the tyres was deemed the safest course of action to restore the vehicle's performance and ensure the driver’s safety.

In addition to replacing the damaged tyres, we recommended conducting regular tyre inspections as part of routine vehicle maintenance. Drivers should visually check their tyres for signs of wear, cracking, bulging, or cuts, as well as monitor tyre tread depth and air pressure. These inspections are crucial in identifying early signs of deterioration, which can help prevent potentially hazardous situations on the road. Tyres should also be professionally checked during scheduled vehicle services to ensure any less obvious damage is identified.

Through our recommendations, the customer gained a clearer understanding of the causes behind tyre wall damage and the importance of regular maintenance. Replacing the damaged tyres not only restored the vehicle’s performance but also ensured the safety of its passengers. Additionally, following our advice on routine tyre inspections, maintaining correct pressure, and rotating tyres will help prolong the lifespan of the new set. This experience highlights how preventative measures are essential for safe, reliable, and efficient driving.
